Sometimes, Nothing Much a video screening La Panadería, Mexico City June 27 2001, 9 pm Curated by Jenifer Papararo Videos by Danny Bowden, Michael Buckland, Karma Clarke-Davis, Jeremy Drummond, Matthew Evans, Lisa Kannako/Peaches, Jennifer McMackon, Jinhan Ko, and Sandy Plotnikoff. With Nothing Much, Instant Coffee makes another minor gesture in the world of thematically-categorized culture. In keep with Instant Coffee projects, a somewhat innocuous theme is used to undermine our expertise. The theme becomes subordinate to our tastes and allows us to bring our friends together. That said, Nothing Much is something really. At its least, it plays with the divide between art production and presentation, and at its best, Nothing Much uses lifestyle as its product. In opposition to slick production yet not lacking in style, all the videos are simply produced with one-take edits and minimal effects. Several document performances, some record simple actions while others capture glimpses of daily life. The studio and artist's mode of production is aestheticized as each artist practices in front of the camera, making do with first takes or seemingly so. The artists are aware of a potential audience and are therefore on their best behavior. But it is still practice, and so what information is conveyed, who controls production or when the work is ready to transmit meaning is not concrete. Nothing Much offers unguarded (or is it staged moments?) where artists no longer have the semblance to control exactly everything that goes into their product. Order of appearance: 1. Danny Bowden 2. Michael Buckland 3. Karma Clarke-Davis 4. Jeremy Drummond 5. Matthew Evans 6. Lisa Kannako/Peaches 7. Jennifer McMackon 8. Jinhan Ko 9. Sandy Plotnikoff plus a p.s. from Instant Coffee, and Henrick Sonneberg and Chris Hanson. Instant Coffee because it claims to be faster and easier, but never pretends to taste better. We gratefully acknowledge the support of FONCA, the Centro de la Imagen/Sala del Cielo, the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development and the Embassy of Canada. La Panadería closed in July 2002.
